STORY OF SUCCESS
FOUNDATION OF THE BREWERY
ᴥ The children of one of the richest citizens in Kranj, Johann Kosler, inherit a large property.
ᴥ Johann Jr., Peter, Josef and Maria decide to found a brewery.
ᴥ The location for building a brewery is decided: Spodnja Šiška, with an excellent source of water and a railway connection.
START OF PRODUCTION
ᴥ Completion of the brewery in January.
ᴥ Approval of the craft permit on February 7.
ᴥ On February 9, the brewery was entered into the Commerce Register under the name Bratje Kosler – proizvodnja piva in alkoholnih pijač (”Gebrüder Kosler – Bier und Spirituosenerzeugung”) – The Kosler Brothers – production of beer and alcoholic beverages.
FOUNDATION OF THE SHAREHOLDING BREWERY
ᴥ The Koslers decide to restructure into a shareholding company in cooperation with the Austrian
ᴥ Credit Institute for Commerce and Industry in Ljubljana and the Graz Breweries Göss, Puntingam and Reininghaus.
ᴥ Name of the new company: Delniška družba pivovarne Union (Union Shareholding Brewery).
ᴥ Shareholding principal: a million crowns
ᴥ Kosler’s share in the new shareholding company: 40%.
ᴥ The shareholding company incorporated the Ljubljana-based Auer and Perless Breweries, followed by a simultaneous cessation of production in both of them. Number of employees in the newly established Union Shareholding Brewery: 242.
INCORPORATION OF OTHER BREWERIES
Incorporation of the Ferles Brewery in Kočevje, the Šmid Brewery in Škofja Loka, the Mayr Brewery in Kranj and Zimmerman in Lesce, the Julius Stare Brewery in Mengeš and the Fröhlich Brewery in Vrhnika.
PRODUCTION OF YEAST AND METHYLATED SPIRITS
ᴥ Construction of the baker’s yeast factory, with a capacity of 1,800 tons a year, as well as factories for methylated spirits, with a capacity of 2,100 hl a year.
ᴥ Construction of the new brewing pot.
ᴥ Renovation and elevation of the water tower.
ᴥ Installation of the first automatic filling machine, with a capacity of 2,000 bottles per hour.
ᴥ Launching the new pneumatic malting plant, with a capacity of 300 wagons of malt a year.
MONOPOLY OF THE UNION SHAREHOLDING BREWERY
ᴥ Termination of production in the former Laško shareholding breweries, preceded by its take-over by the Union Brewery two years before.
ᴥ Incorporation of the Thomas Götz Brewery in Maribor.
ᴥ The Union Shareholding Brewery is the only industrial brewery in the territory that today is occupied by modern Slovenia.
THE SECOND WORLD WAR
ᴥ The brewery gives shelter to Yugoslavian soldiers during the days preceding the war.
ᴥ Following the capitulation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, solders leave their weapons in the brewery, and are then hidden by workers in the underground passageways (the so-called catacombs).
ᴥ The brewery’s position worsens as a consequence of the lack of raw materials and the loss of its sales market.
NATIONALIZATION OF THE BREWERY
ᴥ Nationalization of the former Union Shareholding Brewery by a decree of December 5.
RANAMING OF THE BREWERY
ᴥ New name of the brewery: PIVOVARNA UNION (THE UNION BREWERY).
A DIVERSE BEER RANGE
ᴥ Diversification of the product range: pale lagers, Triglav, Jadran and Vesna (12%), the Ležak pale lager (14%) and the Bok stout beer (16%).
ᴥ Increase in beer production to 147,618 hl.
MODERNIZATION OF THE BREWERY
ᴥ Construction of the new filling plant (Filling plant 1), with a new filling line with a capacity of 36,000 bottles per hour.
ᴥ Launching the new storage plant, with a capacity of storing 40 thousand hectoliters of beer at one time.
ᴥ Import of cooling devices with special turbine compressors from Italy.

Delocalization of the Union Brewery administration from the old building in Celovška street to the newly built building in the former Medvedova (today Pivovarniška – Beer brewing) Street.

Union’s main product has always been - and indeed still remains - its beer (Union lager, Union dark beer, Union Radler shandy, as well as the Union non-alcoholic beer).
In addition to beer, the company Brewery Union, Ljubljana, also produces Sola, a range of refreshing non-alcoholic beverages, near water ZA (Za life, Za harmony, Za symphony), water Nula (Nula raspberry in Nula grapefruit) as well as Zala spring water.
